_alexis_hi all, i would like to know if there are some "medium" introduction for building interpreters with pypy (somewhere between the brainfuck example, and the full featured implementation of io/js)? I looked over the internet but I can't find something like that.14:11
ronny_alexis_: i not aware of one, what do you seek to do?14:15
_alexis_ok thanks ronny, i'd like to play with pypy (by curiosity) more in depth than the brainfuck example.14:16
ronny_alexis_: that goal sounds equally fuzzy to me14:18
ronnydo you have somemthing concrete in mind you'd like to try?14:18

_alexis_yes implementing a toy language with common concepts (object, loops and so on) so I imagine there's more to know than the bf example14:19
ronny_alexis_: i see, then i think you can pretty much use the same pattern pypy use for the pypy interrpreter14:26

UnhelpfulDoes frozenset have any optimizations vs set, on pypy? There are a few I can think of (build a Bloom filter for the set, maybe?)19:10
Alex_Gaynorno, it doesn't19:11
stakkars_ (~tismer@p5DCE2768.dip.t-dialin.net) joined #pypy.19:11
MostAwesomeDudefrozenset's pretty rare, so I wouldn't expect a bunch of work on it.19:13
UnhelpfulI assume JIT might do some things on objects it knows are immutable, but it would seem to me it might make sense to use Bloom filters for frozenset, either built on instantiation or after a few "in" tests against it.19:13
JaRoel|4d (~jaroel|4d@82-169-48-80.ip.telfort.nl) joined #pypy.19:13
UnhelpfulFor that matter, you could also make a Bloom filter for regular sets, but you would have to clear or rebuild it whenever an object is removed.19:14
MostAwesomeDudeWell, you'd need two filters, right? One for the identities, and one for the equality hashes.19:14
UnhelpfulBloom is only probabilistic for positive matches, anyway - you then need to really look in the setfor the item. But it would give fast negative results.19:16
UnhelpfulSo if you want to be really clever about it, you could track negative results for membership tests, then build a Bloom filter when there are enough.19:18
fprimexis there anything like a 'make clean' I should use between translates?19:19
Alex_Gaynornope, you shouldn't need to translate very often though19:19
MostAwesomeDudeUnhelpful: Wouldn't you need a *really* big set for this to be worthwhile, though, considering that the test is already constant-time?19:20
UnhelpfulPerhaps. I suppose if members are indexed by hash we already *sort of* have a partial Bloom filter, don't we?19:22
fprimexthanks. also, the call to package.py on the website is done with python. is this required? can pypy be used for package also?19:23
Alex_Gaynorprobably, if not that sounds like we have a bug19:24

linqTrue enough ronny, I recognize that building a 3d collision api on python is non-trivial. My only point is that things that were once infeasible in python are now at least imaginable thanks to PyPy20:45
linqI was referring (in that link) to a comment someone had made about python not being able to handle realtime 3d simulation. Specifically: "Pure python would probably be too slow for non-trivial, realtime simulations."20:46
ronnylinq: im pretty sure stuff like list-strategies  needs some more work till its doable nicely20:55
DasIchlinq: even with PyPy you will probably hit limits very fast21:04
linqWell, it will certainly be fascinating to see the outcome, either way. Didn't manage to get arigo's 3d hack working (arigo / hack / 3d), but it got me thinking about the possibility of a functional 3d platform in PyPy.21:04
linqI'm curious about what those limits are, and what defines them.21:05
DasIchlinq: take a look at what people are currently doing in with JS and WebGL21:05
linqAre they starting to reach the limitations of jit-aided optimizations? I mean, I suppose there will necessarily always be overhead in a jit, but just how much overhead is what I wonder.21:08
