tilgoviwhat's around in the python community for lightweight, userland, preemptive multitasking. anything?06:31
tilgovilooks like stackless's tasklets can do this, maybe. is there anything like that in pypy?06:33

fzzzytilgovi: yes, check out the greenlet module06:54
tilgovifzzzy: my understanding of greenlets was that they were cooperative only, but I suppose I could set a sigalarm wakeup or something and write my own scheduler to explicitly switch into the hub periodically06:54
tilgovijust wondering if there was anything like that underway06:54
fzzzyah you said preemptive.06:55
tilgoviyes06:55
fzzzydo you really want preemption?06:55
tilgovisometimes06:55
fzzzywhy not just run multiple processes to take advantage of cores06:55
fzzzythat gives you both determinism within a process and parallelism06:56
tilgoviit's not about core utilization as it is about not being able to estimate, up front, the upper bounds on time between hub switch events06:56
tilgoviI find that with sufficient complexity I sometimes hit scenarios where I find myself needing to explicitly sleep lest I starve out other greenlets.06:57
tilgoviit's about being able to mix in CPU-bound tasks every now and then. I know I could always push them off to a separate process and make it an OS problem, and put the I/O barrier back in place06:57
fzzzyyeah06:58
tilgoviBut when I'm not writing python I write erlang and there's something very attractive about preemptive scheduling06:58
fzzzyerlang has actors though, python has shared state06:58
fzzzyare you sure erlang can preempt an actor that's running a turn?06:58
tilgoviI was pretty positive.06:59
tilgoviNo shared state means it's always possible to do so safely, no?06:59
fzzzyit wouldn't matter since there's no shared state06:59
fzzzyyeah06:59
tilgoviYes. I am almost sure erlang's scheduler is preemptive.06:59
fzzzyit seems harder to write the vm that way though06:59
tilgoviYeah, but that's what we have VM people for :)06:59
fzzzywell I know that erlang releases newer than three years old or so have multiple posix threads running the actors07:00
tilgoviyes. the smp beam vm.07:00
tilgovithere's actually a scheduler for each thread07:00
tilgovithere are some settings around scheduler-core affinity and such07:00
tilgovipretty cool stuff.07:01
neunon (~neunon@unaffiliated/neunon) joined #pypy.07:01
tilgoviI don't know that I _need_ any of this in python. I was more asking out of curiosity.07:01
fzzzybut yes, you can use sigalarm to do what you want, I used sigalarm in eventlet for a blocking alarm for debugging07:01
Da_Blitzstacklets/tasklets are in mainline now07:01
tilgoviAlso, I've pushed a gevent stack pretty hard at work, but my coworkers have shot themselves in the foot a few times doing CPU bound tasks.07:01
tilgoviDa_Blitz: so does that have the API to run for a specified number of instructions?07:02
tilgoviBecause I've seen that tasklets API before.07:02
tilgovifzzzy: I was also just idling wondering about it because it occurred to me that writing a scheduler in python would probably be attractive.07:02
Da_Blitzgreenlets and stackless are built on top of it so i assume whatever mechanism they used to stackless till applies07:02
tilgoviDa_Blitz: cool.07:02
tilgovithanks07:02
fzzzyyes, writing a scheduler in python is fun.07:03
tilgoviI really like writing python.07:03
Da_Blitzyou would want to have volentary premption points anyway iirc due to jit07:04
tilgoviI think I'm getting in over my head, but it's fun to think about.07:05
tilgoviI should probably start by building the pypy tip.07:05
fzzzyyou can get a nightly07:06
tilgovioh, right.07:06
tilgoviiirc tip got stackless+jit merged about a month or so ago07:06
tilgoviunless I misunderstood. but that excited me greatly.07:07
fzzzyyeah, me too, i've been waiting for it for years :)07:07
tilgovidoes it work?07:07
fzzzyyep07:07
tilgoviI don't think I see a nightly for it. I may need to translate it myself.07:08
Action: Da_Blitz cant wait to see STM+stackless07:08
tilgoviunless it's just not identified as such07:08
fzzzyit takes forever...07:08
tilgovimy assumption is that the pypy-c-jit nightlies don't have stackless enabled07:08
tilgoviany idea?07:08
fzzzythey do have it enabled07:08
Da_Blitzstackless is enabled by default07:09
tilgovihot.07:09
fzzzyvery hot.07:09
tilgovii'll grab that now.07:09

fzzzyeventlet just works too, didn't require any changes07:11
fzzzythe download page lies about pypy's ability to combine stackless and jit :(07:13
Da_Blitzit has only been added scince the last release07:14
fzzzyyeah07:14

tilgovi1.6 includes?07:30
Da_Blitzi belive they were going for a 1.6.1 release but i think they may just release 1.7 after the sprint07:35
tilgovidarn. oneiric missing libffi5.07:35
tilgovioh good. finally got sbuild/lvm to work. easy forward-port of libffi5. nightly has greenlet, 1.6 does not.07:56
